So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.  1 Corinthians 14:15

Music is an important part of our worship of God – it has the ability to lift and inspire us in a way that words alone can’t do.  We have a fabulous tradition of choral singing at All Saints which stretches back for more than a century, but we also enjoy modern musical approaches too!

Choral Evensong: A Timeless Tradition of Sacred Music at All Saints Aston

Choral Evensong, also known simply as Evensong, is a cherished tradition in Anglican and churches worldwide. This distinctive service blends elements of choral music, scripture readings, and prayers, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Dating back centuries, Choral Evensong continues to captivate worshippers and music enthusiasts alike with its rich musical heritage and spiritual depth.

The roots of Evensong can be traced back to the monastic hours of prayer observed by early Christians. As monastic communities developed structured prayer schedules, the practice of singing psalms and hymns became integral to their worship.

The service, following the order from the Book of Common Prayer by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, is the backbone of the Anglican Choral Heritage and is still celebrated in parish churches and cathedrals alike.

Music is at the heart of Choral Evensong at All Saints Aston, with the choir showcasing a diverse repertoire ranging from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary compositions. The soaring melodies and intricate harmonies create a transcendent experience, lifting the spirits of worshippers and fostering a sense of reverence.

Choral Evensong provides a platform for the choir to showcase their vocal prowess while enriching the worship experience with their artistry. The music adds a layer of beauty and solemnity to the service, enhancing the congregation's spiritual journey. It creates a space where music, liturgy, and history entwine to create a divine act of worship.

Whether seeking solace, inspiration, or simply a moment of reflection, participants find solace in the timeless beauty of Choral Evensong, affirming its status as a cherished tradition in the tapestry of religious observance.

Choral Evensong is sung at the church of All Saints in Aston (Diocese of Sheffield) on the third Sunday of the month at 6pm. Occasionally, extra services of Evensong might be sung on special occasions and feast days. All are invited to join us for our services.
