So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:15
Music is an important part of our worship of God – it has the ability to lift and inspire us in a way that words alone can’t do. We have a fabulous tradition of choral singing at All Saints which stretches back for more than a century, but we also enjoy modern musical approaches too!
Choral Evensong: A Timeless Tradition of Sacred Music at All Saints Aston
Choral Evensong, also known simply as Evensong, is a cherished tradition in Anglican and churches worldwide. This distinctive service blends elements of choral music, scripture readings, and prayers, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Dating back centuries, Choral Evensong continues to captivate worshippers and music enthusiasts alike with its rich musical heritage and spiritual depth.
The roots of Evensong can be traced back to the monastic hours of prayer observed by early Christians. As monastic communities developed structured prayer schedules, the practice of singing psalms and hymns became integral to their worship.
The service, following the order from the Book of Common Prayer by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, is the backbone of the Anglican Choral Heritage and is still celebrated in parish churches and cathedrals alike.
Music is at the heart of Choral Evensong at All Saints Aston, with the choir showcasing a diverse repertoire ranging from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary compositions.
